Almost synonymous with the ever-busy L.A. branch of ASCAP
are Rhythm & Soul executives Alonzo Robinson (Senior Director,
R&S Music Group) and Jay Sloan (Director, R&S Music Group)—guys
who happen to be on the front line of dealing with the PRO's
numerous songwriters, high profile events, and are respected music
industry tastemakers.
Talk a bit about what you two actually do?
Both: Our jobs consist of maintaining and increasing
repertory, resolving members' inquiries, assisting with member
education, and career development.
How involved are you in the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Awards
Show?
Both: It's definitely
a team effort – but we're involved in everything from
song title research of top charted year end songs, reaching out to
our award winning members, venue seating, booking talent, rehearsal/show
schedules, and walk on music.
How do you come up with the ASCAP seminar and mixers?
Alonzo: Jay and I sit down together and brainstorm about event ideas
that are beneficial to our members; then we plan out the event.
Alonzo, what kept you at ASCAP for so many years?
Alonzo: Some songwriters, producers, and the music. Most of the folks
I get to work with make my experience a blast.
What writers/members have surprised you the most?
Alonzo: For me I would have to say, my man, Brian McKnight. The guy
is an Ever-ready Battery that he keeps going...and going!
Jay: We have a lot of great writers, so their success does not surprise
me. What surprises me is other great writers that are not as successful.
Do you all have go-to people in this industry whose opinion
and judgments you really trust?
Alonzo: I have a few folks that I value their opinions, but too many
to list.
Jay: Besides my colleagues, Alonzo Robinson, Tremayne Anchrum and
Walter Jones, there's just too many to name.
What about working in L.A. as opposed to Atlanta or NYC?
Alonzo: I love L.A.; it's the greatest city on the planet. I
love the ATL and NYC, but L.A. is the joint for me.
Jay: Nothing beats L.A., great weather, beautiful people; it's
the entertainment capital of the world!
What advice do you give to your newbie or frustrated songwriters?
Alonzo: Keeping grinding, keep calling, keep dreaming bigger, and
you'll get there.
Jay: Continue working on your craft, believe in yourself, and know
your competition. If you're a writer then you need to know the
other chart-topping writers.
What do you find most fun about your jobs?
Both: Working with the R&S Team, meeting with writers and producers
(finding that next star), listening to music, developing relationships
with industry executives, and creating events.
Where is the industry going?
Alonzo: There's a lot of opportunity for independent artists
now.
Jay: I agree, and I believe there will be much more opportunity in
the digital music world.
